Thor: March 28 – July 24, 2009
I’m so sad to say that we’ve lost another member of our family recently. We got this beautiful great dane puppy on June 24th. For the first 7-10 days, he was a regular puppy. Then he came down w/lethargy, fever, staggered gate with rear legs. After a week or so of trying to figure out what was wrong with him, we took him to a specialist and finally learned he had HOD (http://www.greatdanelady.com/). The prognosis was good. Just had to wait it out a couple months. He’d maybe need surgery on his wrists in the future for angular deformation.
For 3 weeks we treated him for fevers (90% of the time he had them), carried him around and outside to the bathroom and gave him his pain meds. Literally 24 hr/day care. At this point he wasn’t walking at all. He would just sit up occasionally. June 24th he rec’d a chest x-ray because he had a little “cough” – sounded like phlegm in his throat. It turned out his stomach was slipping into the thoracic area – either he had a herniation of the diaphragm or gastro esophageal intussusception – and a possible case of pneumonia.
It was heart wrenching having to make the decision to put him to sleep. I just kept thinking of how “alert” he was and, at the moment, his temp was down and he didn’t seem in any pain. The vet said that with so many problems, he was likely to have more down the road.
He was such a sweetheart. So loving and cuddly. His life was much, much too short.
