Picnic at Hillsborough River State Park

It was a beautiful day!  We headed out to Hillsborough River State Park in Thonotosassa, FL to have a picnic to celebrate several recent birthdays.  We couldn’t have asked for more beautiful picnic weather in November.  The temperature was around 80 and the sun was shining.

This is a park we love to camp in, but we also go there just for day trips.   We usually set-up near the playground by parking lot 4 (the concession area), canoe, play a little football and Bocce Ball, and have a lunch consisting of sub sandwiches or chicken.  I thought it would be nice to change things around a bit.  We set-up near the playground by parking lot 3, played a little softball, ate a lunch consisting of subs (this was a back-up food – my brother forgot the chicken salad at home – bummer), cheese & crackers, grapes and chips.

After lunch some of us hiked.  We walked across the suspension bridge to access the 1.1 mile Baynard Trail.  This was a perfect walk since my 21 month old niece was joining us and walking on her own.  Along the trail there are signs posted about the different animals you may see and the plant life you will see.  On this trip we were able to see an armadillo.  Amazingly, it was the first one I’d ever seen at this park.  I could literally sit for long periods watching this quiet, peaceful creature.

After our hike, we sat by the river for a bit, and then some played a game of Sequence, while others just hung around.  It was another successful family get together.
